Downspout Clogged, Leaking or Coming Off the Wall?

Quick answer: A clogged downspout is usually dust and grit packed at the outlet or in an elbow, a leaking one usually has a joint that has worked loose, and one coming off the wall has lost its straps or its connection to the gutter. All three are repairs, and when one downspout is doing too much work, adding or moving a downspout is the lasting fix. Call or text (725) 502-3114 for a free estimate.

Which problem do you have?

The gutter spills in a storm, but little or nothing comes out of the bottom of the downspoutA clog at the outlet or in an elbow
Water drips or sprays from a joint partway down the wallA loose or cracked joint
The downspout has pulled away from the wall, or swings in the windLoose or broken straps
A gap where the downspout meets the gutterThe connection at the outlet has come apart, sometimes because the gutter above has sagged
Water pools against the house where the downspout lets outThe downspout lets out in the wrong place

Why do downspouts clog and come loose in Las Vegas?

Dust, not leaves. Most of what clogs a Las Vegas downspout is fine desert dust, roof grit and windblown sand, plus the odd palm frond or mesquite pod. Through the dry months it settles at the outlet, and when it gets wet it packs into a cement-like sludge. The first monsoon storm meets an outlet that is already narrowed or shut.

Small downspouts. A 2x3-inch downspout has half the opening of a 3x4-inch, 6 square inches against 12. On a 6-inch gutter, a large roof section or a spot where roof valleys come together, a 2x3 has more water to move through a smaller opening.

Heat and wind on the joints. The outlet, the elbows and the joints down the wall take the same daily heat cycle as the rest of the gutter, and heat movement works connections loose over the years. Wind adds vibration that stresses the connections and elbows.

Sprinklers and hard water. A downspout that a sprinkler hits every morning stays wet far more often than rain alone would make it. Las Vegas water is hard, and it leaves a white crust on the metal and on the stucco behind it.

A sagging gutter. When the gutter above drops, it pulls on the outlet and can pull the top of the downspout apart.

What can I check from the ground?

  1. Watch a downspout in the rain, from a window, a covered patio or the garage. A gutter spilling above a downspout that barely runs is a clog.
  2. Test on a dry day. Aim a garden hose at the roof above the far end of the run and let it run for a few minutes. Water should come out the bottom of the downspout in a steady stream. Watch each joint on the way down for drips or spray.
  3. If the downspout feeds a pipe underground, put the hose in the inlet and go find where the pipe lets out. If the inlet backs up, the pipe is blocked, and a blocked drain sends water back to the wall where nobody notices.
  4. Look at the straps. Each one should hold the downspout tight to the wall. A loose strap you can reach from a step ladder on flat ground is a fair do-it-yourself fix.
  5. Look where the water lands. It should end up at least 5 feet from the foundation, on ground that slopes away from the house. Our post on where downspouts should drain covers it.

Clearing the outlet at the top means a tall ladder or the roof. On a tile roof or a second story, leave that part to us.

What does City Seamless do about it?

We check every downspout for blockages, make sure the elbows and connections are secure, and confirm that each one sends water away from the foundation, not against it. Then we fix what we find:

  • Clear the blockage, and clean and flush the gutter that feeds it.
  • Rebuild a damaged downspout connection, and fasten a loose downspout back to the wall.
  • Replace a downspout that is beyond repair, matched to the color of the rest of the system.
  • Add a downspout. We cut a new outlet into the existing gutter, install the downspout run and route the water away from the foundation. One added downspout in the right place can end a corner overflow.
  • Move a downspout that sends water against a walkway, pools it at the garage or dumps it into a planting bed that cannot take it.
  • Go up to a 3x4-inch downspout where the roof sends more water than a 2x3 can carry.

We install downspouts in 2x3-inch and 3x4-inch sizes, in aluminum, copper and galvanized steel. We repair downspouts on every brand of gutter, not only ours, and our repair work carries a 5-year workmanship guarantee.

Is it a repair or a new run?

A downspout problem is almost always a repair. A clog, a loose joint, a broken strap or a downspout in the wrong place is fixed on the downspout itself. A single new downspout is priced by the job.

Look at the gutter above it, too. If the gutter is sagging, leaking at its seams or spilling along its length, the downspout may only be where the problem shows. A gutter that has failed is a new run: .032-gauge seamless aluminum, one piece per run, with a 30-year material warranty and a 5-year workmanship guarantee.

If your gutters are clogged but otherwise working, a handyman or a cleaning service may be the most economical choice. We clean and flush gutters as part of a repair or re-hang, and we do not offer cleaning by itself.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my downspout clog when it hardly rains in Las Vegas?

Because the dry months give dust, grit and roof granules time to settle at the outlet. When it gets wet it packs into a cement-like sludge, so the first big storm finds the downspout already narrowed or shut.

Can you add a downspout to my existing gutters?

Yes. We cut a new outlet into the existing gutter, install the downspout run and route the water away from the foundation.

Should my downspouts be 2x3 or 3x4?

A 3x4-inch downspout has twice the opening of a 2x3-inch, 12 square inches against 6. We recommend 3x4 for 6-inch gutters, larger roof sections and places where roof valleys come together.

How far from the house should a downspout let out?

At least 5 feet from the foundation, onto ground that slopes away from the house and not toward the lot next door. Confirm what applies at your address with your building department.

Do you repair downspouts on gutters you did not install?

Yes. City Seamless repairs all gutter types and brands, not only systems we installed.
